Living Environments
There is a new movement underway to create living environments within the interiors of our living and working environments through the use of planting greenery and creating self contained eco systems inside structures. In essence it is to bring nature inside our living and working environments. Nature is a major source of our inspiration and harmonic balance and the time we spend inside should restore our vitality and creativity to allow us to flourish in a comfortable, peaceful and relaxing space. Thus the places we work and live become the direct extension of our intellectual, spiritual and physical body and should be a place of harmony and enjoyment. A natural living environment restores our disconnect from nature as well as provide a healthier more productive working environment.
Studies have shown that living environments create higher productivity, lower absenteeism, have a high propensity to lure prospective employees away from other potential employers and are not only aesthetically pleasing and increase our general welfare but actively purify the air of internal contaminants. Thus, they create a healthier work environment by breaking down VOC's (volatile organic compounds) found in the air within building structures. Even at very low levels, VOC’s can cause sick building syndrome (SBS) and building related illnesses with symptoms such as loss of concentration, headaches, dry eyes, nose, throat, a feeling of dizziness and mild nausea. Research has consistently shown that living green and flowering plants can remove up to 70% of volatile organic compounds found in office air by rendering them inert with micro organisms living in the soil near the their roots.
Creating living spaces indoors require creating subsets of the outdoor environment. By and large all that is accomplished by taking plants from outdoors and bringing them inside in pots is to create dead zones, as they cannot sustain themselves as an ecosystem and end up dying. It is not enough just to stick some plants into a foreign interior space as soil is a very complex and living system with billions of various organisms in it. The challenge is to create a living soil that will sustain itself indoors. Living environments are designed to do just that.
A well planned and maintained living environment will provide a healthier and more enjoyable living environment for the occupants. Elements such as natural lighting, good indoor air quality, plants, natural ventilation, and soothing sounds from a waterfall will produce a working environment that is not only healthier to live in and environmentally beneficial but also makes people feel good. It is our goal to help create such living environments.
