Insulation
There are several types of insulation including blown foam, loose fill, blankets, rigid foam, wool rock and even recycled materials such as cotton can be used to slow heat transfer in or out of structures. Heat is energy and travels from a source of greater to lesser and carries moisture with it that can degrade metal or wood structures over time. Thus it is not the “cold creeping in” but rather the heat escaping or penetrating the building through the building envelope regardless of whether it is the ceiling, walls or the floor. It is also important to use the various types of insulation or combination thereof in areas where they work best depending on the type of structure, above or below grade, levels of humidity, moisture conditions, exposure to UV, insect conditions, type of structure, necessary levels of air and moisture permeability, required longevity, amount of acceptable settling, loss of insulation levels and or properties over time as well as minimizing the cost per application or square foot to provide for a return on initial investment. Using the wrong insulation in a specific application can be worse than using none at all as it can actually lead to greater energy loss, provide shelter for insects and or promote the growth of fungus and molds.
The primary purpose of insulation is to stop heat flow into or out of a structure, however air flow and leakage can cost even more in energy dollars than heat flow. Different insulations provide better resistance to air flow and actually provide higher resistance to heat per thickness, type and location of the application. In fact, new energy efficient construction can be so air tight that the indoor air quality is substantially reduced and requires other remedies at minimal costs that will actually provide for far greater indoor air quality than typical new construction or older structures have. Thereby making your working environment healthier and thus more productive.
Whether your building new construction or renovating an existing structure we can consult you on the proper applications of insulation that are not only the most cost affective but will provide the best performance over time and actually provide a return on investment.
